Q & A: Boarding @ BRK

What do the dogs do all day?

Eat. Sleep. Play. Repeat.

Breakfast starts at 7:30 am. Each dog or dog family is let out to the dog yard while their room is being tidied and their breakfast is served. Dogs come in to eat. After all dogs have been fed, we all go out again. Then the dogs rest to digest!

Mid morning, playful dogs can have some social time. If your dog is social, then they can go out with an appropriate social group for play time, once again. If they prefer alone time, your dog will go out with people only. At noon all dogs go out again. Then siesta until mid afternoon.

Dinner is served at 4:30 pm. We run the same process as breakfast: dogs go out, food is served, dogs eat and then go out again.

Our final turn out of the night is at 9:30 pm. All dogs go out one more time before cookies and lights out. Good night dogs.

Where do the dogs sleep?

We have seven rooms total. Four rooms are single rooms, about 5 ft by 6 feet. Three rooms are multi-dog family rooms, about 6 ft by 10 feet. All rooms are a combination of cinder block half walls for privacy and heavy duty chain link tops and fronts.

Each room has a Kuranda elevated dog bed for each dog. We find some dogs lounge on it often. Others go back and forth between the floor and the bed. All dogs who don’t eat their blankets, are welcome to bring a washable blanket from home. We do not take dog beds, larger than a standard bed pillow, from home.

Do I need to bring my own dog dishes?

Unless your dog requires special accommodations, no. We have stainless steel food and water buckets. All dishes and buckets are regularly washed and sanitized.

What do I need to bring?

Please bring your dog on a leash, your dog’s current vet records with vet contact information and enough food for your dog’s stay. If your dog is staying for a weekend, please measure out enough food for the duration and send it in a ziplock bag or appropriately sized plastic bin. Only send a large full manufacture’s bag of food for extended stays (two weeks or longer).

We do provide Diamond Naturals Chicken and Rice adult dog food at an additional fee for those that forget food or run out of food. It is $1.00 per cup.

Do you have cameras so I can see my dog anytime?

We do not. We will, however, send you periodical text updates and pictures.

My dog isn’t neutered/spayed, can they stay?

Yes, your unaltered dog can stay, however, we cannot take a female in heat. If your dog has not had her first heat cycle, we ask for you to watch for signs of going into heat before her visit. Should your dog go into heat while she is staying with us, depending on the kennel population and the length of her stay, we may require her to be moved to your veterinarian’s facility or picked up by your emergency contact if you cannot pick her up yourself. Should your dog go into heat before a scheduled stay, we require you to provide us with the date of the first day in heat. She will be allowed to stay one month after her first day of heat cycle. Any dog less than two weeks after the last day of bleeding and swelling will not be allowed to stay. Any dog bleeding or with visible swelling will not be allowed to stay. We will gladly welcome her back afterwards!

What vaccines do you require?

We require a current Rabies, Bordetella and Distemper (or Leptospirosis, if your vet alternates between Distemper and Leptosirosis) vaccine. We also require your dog be on Heartworm prevention and flea and tick preventative. Both topical and/or oral flea and tick prevention methods are allowed. We do not allow natural flea and tick prevention measures.

You can have your veterinarian email copies to nicole@bigriverkennels.com or bring a paper copy when you arrive.

My dog takes medicine. Can you administer it?

Yes. If your dog takes medication, daily, weekly or only once during their stay, we will make sure your dog gets their medicine as prescribed. Medicine needs to come in original packaging with dosing instructions. We ask that if your dog takes their pills in a pill pocket or cheese that you provide whatever delivery means they prefer. Should your dog need to be administered medicine manually, that is fine.

How do I make a reservation and how far in advance do I need to request dates?

The easiest way to book is through our website. Go to www.bigriverkennels.com, click the BOOK NOW button. It will take you to our booking software program where you can then add your dates, details, extras, etc. No booking is guaranteed until you receive an email confirmation back from us.

We suggest you make your dog’s reservation at the same time you make your own travel plans. Holidays, summer and football weekends, we book up early and fast. We will take reservations no further out than one year. Some holidays we may require a non-refundable security deposit of $50 per dog.

Are you open on holidays?

We are always open to dogs, but closed to people on major holidays: New Years Day, Memorial Day,  Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day & the following Friday, Christmas Day.

BRK Tales of Norway & the Northern Lights

One of my favorite aspects of running a dog boarding facility is talking with all of you when you drop-off or pick-up your dogs. I love hearing about your adventures near and far. So, during this Covid-19 pandemic, when we are all told to stay home, we wanted to share some of your great adventures. The first story we share comes from Sadie & Cooper’s family. Their story starts on a cruise in January, a time when I was still cleaning up from the holidays and my connection to a pandemic was only from movies.

Cooper & Sadie on a Nature Hike at Big River Kennels

Norway & The Northern Lights, by Donna

A great last-minute deal found us on a Viking cruise in Norway in late January to see Northern Lights.  When boarding the ship a simple question was if we had been sick in the last several days. No other precautions.  Friends that did the same cruise in February said they had their temperatures taken before they were allowed to board. So, precautions had started.  During our cruise, each stateroom got a letter stating that no one on board ship had been in China for the two previous weeks. But none of us probably thought how the virus would impact the world.

At any rate, while we were cruising daylight hours were very short.  Picture above was taken around 9:30 am in an area outside Bergen.

Salmon is a big industry for the country.  Saw lots of the growing areas for the salmon while cruising.  We even toured a salmon museum in one of the stops.

Due to such a long season with little light, lots of houses keep a light burning in at least one window all day.  It was end of January but this house just looked like the perfect Christmas card. There was even a big dog sleeping on the porch.

Yes, we had warm clothes and needed them for the weather. Buses still drove all the tours around to their intended sights. Aren’t you glad you don’t have to deal with this when you want to use your car?

While in Tromso we signed up for a Northern Lights hunt that went out into the country.  We were gone from 6:00pm till 1:00am “hunting.” Saw lights at three different spots. Had soup and bread at a campfire in the snow.

This was taken with our guide’s GOOD camera.  With our iPhones and our naked eyes  we just could see faint green.

Sunset on a sea day.  I took way too many pictures of this as we moved along.

And we enjoyed getting the pic of the dog Christmas tree  while we were gone!

Last day headed to disembarking outside London.  I’d like to add that we’ve been to Norway in spring and summer too. It is a beautiful country to visit.

where did you go?

Where did you go while your dog was here?

Because of our business, we often get the enjoyment of virtual traveling with our customers. Some of you have gone on some wonderful trips while your dog stayed with us. And, we’ve received some pretty amazing pictures as replies to the pictures we send of your dog(s); sunsets from sailboats, castles from central Europe and architecture from Iceland to name just a few.

We know, all too well, that many of you canceled trips because of Covid-19. And, now, most of us aren’t even going to the grocery store. We thought it would be fun to share some travel stories among the Big River Kennels family.

So, where did you go while your dog(s) came to Big River Kennels?

Send your answer to derek@bigriverkennels.com. Your response can be as short or long as you want. Did you travel to another continent or just down to the beach? Did you go to see friends or visit family? To celebrate a birthday, anniversary, or graduation? Tell us a story about your whole trip, or just an anecdote about one small part of it. Include pictures, drawings, web links, video clips, etc.

We will take your responses and share them with the Big River Kennels community on our blog, Facebook and email. That way, while we are all going a bit stir crazy social distancing, we can travel vicariously through people who share some common bonds, dogs and Big River Kennels.

While we are on the subject, you can find our official Covid-19 pandemic response at https://www.bigriverkennels.com/big-river-kennels-covid-19-pandemic-response/. We are still running our prepaid specials for boarding and daycare. Good news! We did receive enough contributions to our GoFundMe (https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-big-river-kennels) to make us eligible for the match from their corporate donors. So, thank you to all who donated and shared!!

Big River Kennels Covid-19 Pandemic Response

It seems everybody is going a little stir crazy at home. So, we have taken the time to put some information on how Big River Kennels is responding together for you.

Transparency on Disinfectants and Cleaning Measures

We use a disinfectant with an EPA (Reg. No.10324-141-81973) number listed on List N: Disinfectants for Use Against SARS-CoV-2. List N includes products that meet EPA’s criteria for use against SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus that causes the disease COVID-19. Kennels are cleaned after each dog and on a regular schedule during longer stays. Main areas are wiped down daily. Toys and community property are disinfected every 24 hours.

Extended Hours

We are offering extended pick-up and drop-off hours for medical professionals and first responders. Please call us with your specific need and we will work it out.

Compliance with State & Federal Recommendations

As of March 27, 2020 we are not listed on the mandatory closed list for the state of Alabama. We are open for boarding, daycare, and training.

However, in order to provide enough space for everyone to remain the recommended 6-foot distance during pickup and drop-off, we have opened our new building early, and request that only one client family be in the building at each time. Should anyone needing our services feel more comfortable, we can also offer car-side service with payment on-line and minimal person-to-person contact. We will update this policy as new recommendations arise.

Brady is one of the first dogs to train in the new building!

How to: Trim Your Dog’s Nails

We found this video and think it might help some of you who are nervous about how to trim your dog’s toe nails. If after watching it, you’re still not ready to give it a go, it’s something you can add the next time you are at the kennel.
